Phone wire color coding

Although you may find early cloth wire used for your phone, it is more likely you have a four conductor wire with red green yellow black wires which can carry two lines or newer wire with blue orange green and brown pairs which can carry four lines
On the old system red and green ( which I remember as Christmas tree ) are the primary pair and yellow and black (or bumble bee ) are the secondary line.
With the new system you have ( from top to bottom ), line one; blue ( sky ), line 2; orange (sunset), line 3; green ( grass ), line 4; brown (dirt ).
Each pair has a solid and striped wire which should be matched for consistency.
The Phone jack generally has the old red green yellow black system and when hooking it up the red and green are the primary line or line one, and the yellow black are the secondary line or line two.
